Friday Forum: The Show(s) You'd Love to See Jamie Bamber Guest Star On
I must confess, I have ulterior motives for this weeks post. It's not just that I want to see Jamie back on U.S. TV screens. It's not just that I want to see Jamie on my favorite TV show currently airing. It's that I want to take the opportunity to pimp my current favorite TV show airing. It's also perfect timing since the second season debuts July 13th, at 9:00pm est on USA. So, for my dream Jamie Bamber guest starring appearance, I present to you....

White Collar

Tiffani Thiessen (Elizabeth Burke), Tim DeKay (Peter Burke) and Matt Bomer (Neal Caffrey)

For those not already watching, here's the White Collar 101: Neal Caffrey is a charming criminal mastermind, a con-man, an "alleged" (as he likes to point out) thief and a convicted forger. Just three months shy of serving out a four year sentence for bond forgery, Neal escapes from prison. The reason? The love of his life, Kate, dumped him. Enter Peter Burke, the FBI agent who did what no one else could, catch (and convict) Neal Caffrey. Peter is tasked with catching Neal, again, and does. But looking at another four years in prison, Neal proposes a deal to Peter: parole him, with an electronic ankle monitor, and he'll be a consultant for the FBI, helping Peter catch other elusive, white collar, criminals. Now, instead of a super max prison cell, Neal has a two mile radius (which, if you don't know, is A LOT of territory in New York City) and, thanks to the equally charming and sympathetic June (Diahann Carroll), lives in an incredible mansion. Peter, meanwhile, does his darnedest to keep Neal out of trouble, not an easy job when Neal insists on tracking down his ex. There's also Peter's awesome wife Elizabeth, Neal's former/current partner in crime, Mozzie (Wilie Garson), some other great supporting and reoccurring characters...and a dog.

Thus begins a beautiful partnership. Literally. Have you seen Matt Bomer?

I admit my initial desire to see Jamie on White Collar was purely superficial. Jamie and Matt working side by side? That much beauty on screen together could kill me, but I would certainly die happy. But it is more than that (really). I can imagine the banter. White Collar has some great dialogue. My favorite line of Season 1, which will likely lose impact out of context, was Neal's, "I was forced Fed." And whether you've just watched Jamie on TV or seen him at a convention or read an interview with him, you know he's a quick wit.

Matt in Men's Health magazine and Jamie in FHM: Style is very important on White Collar and further proof Jamie looks great in a suit.

Of course, Jamie also looks good out of a suit, as People magazine showed us.

Last year, People also picked Matt as one of the beautiful people. Closeups can be just as awe inspiring.

Beyond the shallow, after four seasons of Battlestar Galactica and a season of Law & Order: UK, I 'd love to see Jamie appear in something lighter. Not that White Collar doesn't have it's serious moments (the closing moments of the first season are a perfect example), but it's by and large a fun, lighthearted, "blue skies" show. It may only be an hour of television, but Battlestar Galactica's 'Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down' showed Jamie can be funny. His reactions to Ellen Tigh's behavior? Priceless. So White Collar could be the series to show off his range.

I've even gone so far as to come up with some specific scenarios I'd love to see Jamie in, but I don't want to step on the writers toes. ;) Instead, I'll keep my thoughts general and simply say I could envision him as a rival, the British version of Neal Caffrey, or an Interpol agent or art dealer.

But should my dream not become a reality, I also wouldn't mind seeing Jamie appear on USA's upcoming Facing Kate, starring his former co-star Michael Trucco. Granted, I would spend half the episode going, "Lee! Sam!", but it's been over a year since Galactica ended, so I say bring on the reunions!

Now that you know my dream guest star casting, what's yours? What series would you love to see Jamie on? And, since I did it, feel free to pimp your show.

This is going way out on a limb, but since it's one of my faves, and I was discussing my fannishness for a certain character who is unlucky in love over on nicole_anell's journal recently... well here it is:

Dexter. I know, WUT?... but hear me out!

Everything you need to know about Dexter, if you don't already.

[SPOILERS if you haven't seen through S4!!!]

Loved Deb's arc in Season 4, adore Jen Carpenter and adore that character. Really feel like they went from not quite knowing how best to utilize her outside of foil/motivation for Dexter (which was still excellent) to her having some of the best storylines in the show. After all of that, more than ever I'd love her to find a guy who deserves her. Someone who loves her because of, not in spite of, her ambition and her determination and her awesome potty-mouth. Which I think Lundy (sob!) did, actually, although despite the strong connection between those two there were of course the latent daddy issues fuelling her attraction to him; hopefully, now she has a fuller picture of what Harry was really like, the Electra complex isn't going to be as big an issue anymore. Still, after so many train-wreck relationships (At least poor Anton wasn't killed or turned out to be a killer, he just had his heart broken), Deb deserves to really score. And I really hope they don't shoe-horn her together with Quinn. (Yeah, OK he just had a tough knock too finding out he was screwing the Trinity Killer's homicidal daughter, but sorry... he's still an ASSHOLE, IMO. The idea of them hooking up just fills me with UGH.)

I'm thinking more along the lines of a guy that initially gets pulled in as a material witness or even a suspect in a big murder - handsome, rich playboy type. Scion of a hotel or shipping empire, O.G. Florida money, who seems like he ought to be a douche but as it turns out he's a shockingly down-to-earth, smart, decent guy. Someone who is frustrated and unfulfilled doing what (and whom) is expected of a man of his means. Who'd be challenged and intrigued by a bullheaded, independent woman. The last guy you'd expect her to be with, but he's all over it. Wouldn't hurt if he was beautiful. Like, staggeringly beautiful.

Why yes, like THAT. ;)

Of course, because she's Deb (i.e. "Mother fuck me, this guy can't be for real. What the hell could he possibly see in me?!"), she'd resist quite a bit before realizing she hit the mother lode. As a side note, it amuses me to think of Masuka still pining away, but now with bonus wisecracks such as how hard it is to compete with Bruce Wayne. Heh heh.

Mind you, Jamie'd be the icing on my idealized layer cake of a denoument for this show; there's another facet to me wanting to see Deb in a stable, settled 'ship, but it's integral to how I'd like to see the series end. I won't elaborate unless someone really wants to hear it. :P

Other ideas:

Mad Men: Okay, admittedly... I don't watch Mad Men. I know, I know... it's just one of those shows that I keep telling myself I'll get around to catching up and I never find the time. I would, though, FULLY support anything which puts Jamie in period 60's clothes looking dapper and gorgeous.

Fringe: Because it's another one of my favorites, and because it's a show where the possiblities are so endless; now that they've properly introduced the alternate universe, there's even the possiblity of him playing two versions of the same character. Bonus! (Maybe he could be someone in the Altverse who is sympathetic to Team Ourverse... and in a twist, the Ourverse version of him is a villain. Oooooo!)

Justified: My other current absolute favorite. I don't expect to force him to have to do a Kentucky accent (though I have faith in him to pull it off... sorta. ;) ) But he could always be an out-of-towner. Again, villain would be cool, or maybe an uncomfortable ally of Raylan Givens. Basically, it's also a bit of a shallow longing, too - Olyphant + Bamber = way too much hotness for my TV. XD

I'm way behind on Dexter, so skipping over that part. ;)

I thought about Justified, but worry about the accent. There's no question he does an awesome American accent, but a Southern American accent? That seems to be a tough won for Brits.

Fringe is an excellent suggestion! That's definitely a show I could see him on. At some point Olivia has to make it back to her own world. Perhaps Jamie could help he do it? :)
zegeekgirl From: zegeekgirl Date: June 25th, 2010 05:03 am (UTC) (Link Me)
Yeah, I've seen a few good Brits-do-Southern-accents (Ken Branagh in The Gingerbread Man comes to mind. And well, there's Vivien Leigh... ;) ) But many do struggle. Poor Callis in Numb3rs... that was awkward. o_O

I fully support the idea of Jamie smuggling Ourlivia out of her imprisonment. Come on, Bad Robot... work with us here!

I would love to see him on Boardwalk Empire, I know it's not been broadcast yet but with the people involved it's bound to be good and I'd love to see Jamie in prohibition era style clothes!

I think they're making a TV show about the Borgias, if that turns out like Rome or the Tudors (the good parts), then I wouldn't mind seeing him on that either.

I love Fringe and Breaking Bad but I can't imagine what part he could play on either of those.

Oh and Matt Bomer is definately very pretty! I might check out White Collar but I'm not much of a Burn Notice fan so I don't know whether USA shows are really my cup of tea....

OOH OOH, yes please. Tough gig to get, tho, I bet. You know probably everyone in town is trying to get cast in "The Scorsese Show." :-O

I love Fringe and Breaking Bad but I can't imagine what part he could play on either of those.

See above re: Fringe. ;) See, I think that's probably one of the easier ones to slot him into; they are coming up with new, varied & interesting characters all the time.

Yeah I know! But he would so fit into the era and he could use the American accent! Casting directors should from now on just refer to us, we'll get the job done ;-)

Re: Fringe: I trust the Fringe writers could come up with an interesting character and there are definately a lot of possibilities, but that show is so crazy it's hard to imagine a fitting character myself!
asta77 From: asta77 Date: June 27th, 2010 04:12 pm (UTC) (Link Me)
I forgot about the new series about the Borgias! Jamie hasn't done a period piece in awhile. It might be time for another go at a costume drama. Plus, they always look to hire Brits for European roles. Good idea! :)

Well, obviously I highly recommend checking out White Collar. ;) Have you seen the films Catch Me If You Can and The Thomas Crown Affair? If you have - and enjoyed them - then I would say you would enjoy White Collar. It's very similar in subject matter, tone and style. Season 1 comes out on DVD July 13 and USA is having a marathon on July 12, though I don't think they are reairing the pilot (which is one of the best I've ever seen).

I'd behind the Borgias series, too (love Neil Jordan), but hopefully they have some decent supporting roles if that were the case... all the leads are cast :P

(Doesn't specify in this piece, but Francois Arnaud is playing Cesare.) Drat!

Boy oh boy, where do I sign to make this happen??

I'd LOVE this. I think some kind of British Interpol agent would be great - something that would mean he could come back again. And they could let him use his natural accent (for a change!) as that would also be lovely.

The only problem is, I'll now be sad when this doesn't happen *g*

I don't know if I've mentioned this before but I less than three that icon so HARD. :) Where is the source pic for that?!
hockeyvaughnfan From: hockeyvaughnfan Date: June 25th, 2010 08:58 pm (UTC) (Link Me)
It's an icon I made myself - the picture came from an interview done with the local paper here when Jamie was in town appearing in Dr Faustus *sighs at memories*

Please feel free to snag it if you like it, I'm happy to share

I knew you'd be on board with the White Collar casting. :D

You know his sister has a multi-episode guest starring role on USA's Royal Pains? Hopefully, she'll put in a good word for her brother. ;)
hockeyvaughnfan From: hockeyvaughnfan Date: July 5th, 2010 09:45 pm (UTC) (Link Me)
Well you know me, there are some things I'm completely predictable over *g*

Ohhh, here's hoping indeed - come on Sass put in a good word for big brother!

I would be a happy, happy camper if Jamie was to get a role in True Blood. He would make a brilliant vampire and also him and Alexander Skaarsgard together would melt my tv.
asta77 From: asta77 Date: June 28th, 2010 12:51 am (UTC) (Link Me)
True Blood would be great exposure for him. Possibly in more ways than one. ;) I wouldn't mind seeing him as vampire, but I would lean towards him playing a shape-shifter. That way he could go out in the sunlight and wouldn't have to wear the pasty white makeup. ;)
spongetrisha From: spongetrisha Date: June 28th, 2010 08:34 pm (UTC) (Link Me)
Yeah he would be a great shape-shifter or he could be a new breed of vampire who are able to go out in daylight.
acsgrlie From: acsgrlie Date: June 28th, 2010 07:19 am (UTC) (Link Me)
Yes! I'm so behind the White Collar casting! It's such a great show and I would love to see Jamie try some more comedy.

Another show I'd love to see him, simply because it's my favorite show, would be Supernatural. They had Mark Sheppard as an upper-level demon and I couldn't see why Jamie couldn't play the same role ;) Or even just as a one episode guest star.

Big Bang Theory would be really cool too. As himself or playing a character. Katee already made an appearance as a fantasy of herself for Wolowitz so it'd be great if they referenced that.
