Gaaaaah, it's nearly the end!  And we've reached the first of the two episodes that Sky has been so secretive about it they've posted NO images at all until just now. (Yeah, we haven't been neglecting doing promotional still updates; there haven't been any released to post! :P)

Get ready for LOTS OF THINGS GO BOOM, as evidenced if you watched the trailer for this week's episode. In the meantime, once you've seen it please fire away in the comments...

There's a bit of a spoiler in my TV magazine for nest weeks episode. All I'll say is a there's a a a bloody great cliffhanger to lead us into the final show.

I think we're in for a bumpy ride as the director of the first two episodes, directs the last two!

Gutted we're nearly at the end of this fantastic series, it's gone way to quickly and I shall miss the White watch crew. Especially Jamie and Taron. I've gotten quite used to seeing heir little angst ridden faces on my TV screen for the last few weeks.

This time last year, Jamie was over here in the UK and had just started work on the show. Wonder if he'll be coming back soon. Not knowing if we're to get a season 2 is killing me. Don't want to say goodbye to yet another perfect TV character :(

I've been in that tunnel numerous times, horrid narrow , congested. Staggering that they didn't really use the real tunnel. Props people did a fantastic job.

History lesson from Billy, nice touch and a bit of info I didn't know!

Trish not getting on with Grace

Kev meeting Grace...sniff

Kev's hand on the car window , mirroring Trish. no need for words.. The look said it all..

Asbo , Ziggy.. Heroe's

Bang, fire, explosions...how did they do that, movie worthy... Heart pounding!

Kev and Mal working together!

"Do what you need to but you've got half the time you thought you had!"

Asbo.. "I'll find her"....hero

Trish.."I'm sorry, I love you"

Mal "come on Guv, if the rookie can get through, so can we"

Heroes through the flames moment!

Kev finding Asbo in the smoke, and leaving him there to die,

Kev going back for Asbo and giving him the spare oxygen

Asbo in tears over not finding Trish.... Sniff

Kev running out of air, collapsing.... Noooooooo

Where's Trish?

Ziggy washing the grime off her hands

Kev in a hospital bed looking so vulnerable

Such a sad moment with the nurse, relating to the student nurse story Kev tells to Miss Pincham but this time the nurse pities him when she reads his notes and he knows she does. A beautifully sad scene, played the way Jamie plays them. Tear inducing to the hardest heart.

I'm going to have to watch it again. they did something very similar in London's Burning many years ago, but this was way better. Just seen the behind the scenes clip sky posted.
are they really going to be that mean?

What's happened to Trish.. Could fate be so cruel to Kev.....

There's a tiny clip of Kev and Trish in the sea on one of the Sky videos. It's not clear if it's real life, a dream, a flashback , a wishful daydream or they're ghosts. It throws all kinds of possibility for the final episode. I guess we're going to be guessing until the last minute as to what happens to the pair of them

Sky1 tweeted yesterday that it was too early to say if there was going to be a season 2. Didn't Jamie say his contract was up on Monday 7th, that if there was a season 2 . They would have to notify him by then wouldn't they?

So much Trish skepticism all of the sudden! I feel like that was prime for eps. 3-4 but she's earned a lot of respect back since, hasn't she? ;)

Truthfully though, while Kev and Trish are at the heart of the show now, and I would hope for at least one more season... the show could definitely go on without them. Dennis's story and redemption has been as important to the overall arc as theirs; down the line, should Jamie and Jodie decide they want to move onto other projects, I could see Taron becoming the defacto lead easily.

(It's not unlike what happened on Shameless UK; Anne Marie Duff and James McAvoy left the show after Series 2, and TBH I really felt like the show wasn't the same without Fiona and Steve but it did continue to work for a few more series after that. It's gone on way too long now! ;) )

If Trish isn't dead where the hell is she, unless she was unconscious, wouldn't she of been recognised or wouldn't she of tried to get word to Kev that she's OK. Although in truth, she's not the most considerate person so who knows!. I intrigued as to how they're going to explain her disappearance!

I emailed Kudos re second series. Their reply was they have no news of series 2 but they have their fingers crossed there is one. I suppose they're waiting for sky to say yes. Sky need to say YES!. The thought of another series will be the only thing stopping me getting uber depressed at Series one being over on Thursday.
Plus Jamie needs a job. He's got 3 lots of college funds to find!

This was my favourite episode so far, I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through, no fingernails left peeps.

Trish can't be dead, she just can't

Poor Kev, how much more can this man take :-(

Kev meeting Grace was a nice touching moment in all the chaos

Action Asbo that is all

So sky have just tweeted that it's to early to say if there will be a be a 2nd series but to follow Kudos, Sky and TheSmoke on sky twitter accounts. Slightly curious they've made such a statement!. My hope is that they will announce series 2 straight after this weeks episode along with details of the DVD release. Hoping, hoping, hoping!,,

I know the DVD details have been online but Sky will probably announce it after the final(sob ) episode. That's what I meant about the DVD.

Just saw another trailer for the finale. .. Fire and hugs. Have no idea how it's going o end. More edge of seat stuff me thinks. Can't wait but dreading it at the same time!

I'm extremely late to comment (given the season 1/series 1 finale is tomorrow), but I held off watching this just in case anything really terrible happened. March and April have been cruel months in terms of deaths on TV series I watch regularly. But even with my recent track record, I'm not convinced Trish is dead. How much is poor Kev to endure? Why waste so much potential in regards to Trish's character development? And would they really kill her off in such contrived way? I mean, to have Trish die because Grace's mom wouldn't listen and then became nearly hysterical? AND she had to save Dennis?

I was also having some issues with the uneven tone, particularly in the last scene with the nurse and Kevin. I would wonder if she was another figment of his imagination, accept she apparently was talking to Mal. Though Kev could have imagines that too. She just reminded me of Head!Shrink with behavior that doesn't seem appropriate in the moment.

She just reminded me of Head!Shrink with behavior that doesn't seem appropriate in the moment.

I felt the exact same way. Particularly as I definitely felt like Trish being the body in the morgue was unlikely, I wondered how much of that entire scene was Kev's grief and delirium rising to the surface.

The tightrope walk of Kev's psychological status in these final episodes is *destroying* me. SO MUCH MORE on this to come in finale comments... but undeniably, Jamie is doing some incredible work with this aspect of the plot.
From: genesgal Date: April 10th, 2014 08:33 am (UTC) (Link Me)
Asta77, I really hadn't thought that about the nurse but you old well be right. I just linked the nurse being a total opposite of the student nurse Kev described in the first ep.

Slightly curious as to why Kev don't call Trish to get out of the car and out of the tunnel when things started going wrong, she would know what way she was going by the direction the cars were facing. .

My "gasp" moment was Kev leaving Asbo to die...I couldn't believe he did that. Of course a few seconds later he went back , but still that moment had me wondering if I knew Kev at all.

I think most of the episodes have had weak moments but to borrow from Mal " I 'd rather have The Smoke on a slightly disjointed day than another show on a good one"!

I know a few people(not really on here) have moaned about Jamie's London accent being wrong. A friend of mine lives a mile away from Mile End , in Bow. She's a true East ender, born within earshot of Bow Bells She said his accent was 95% right and that it was only the occasional word was wrong.

In previous multi episode trailers there's a moment of Trish and Kev together that hasn't been in any ep but that could be a red herring , a flashback, a dream, anything. I have no idea if Trish survives..or indeed if Kev does ,baring in mind we've seen him and Gog in a fire in the trailer for tonight's show. I have no idea what's going to happen but I'm already nervous about it. Will we and Kev get the happy ending we want!

Pippa has just done a pod cast. She said that some story lines are tied up but that it's also open ended for a second series if that were to happen.
The important thing is she still has Ziggy's haircut... 6 months after filming finished. With all the other actors being very tight lipped and quiet , can we but hope that series 2 will be announced at the end of tonight's show or is it just wishful thinking on my part!

Okay... let's get into this one!

I actually wanted to go back and watch it a second time to confirm my gut feeling, which does hold up: This is actually my least favorite episode of the season. There are many things I do really love in it, but overall the amount of time we spent dealing with the tunnel explosion and the related plot threads almost made this seem more like a bottle episode in the degree to which the story was contained than the actual bottle episode the week before!

Also, though I totally get how this episode moves the story forward to where it needs to be in the finale... I admit, it does bug me that LK chose to go the route of involving Trish in a huge fire scenario as the penultimate plot. We've talked a lot about how she's taken many common tropes and turned them inside-out in the writing so far, but to me this felt mostly tropey without a whole lot of strong foiling of expectations to it. It felt like the show at its soapiest, conveniently placing the one non-White Watch prinicpal character in harms way to get there.

Now, mind you, some of the strongest work in the episode from the cast came from Jodie, particularly before the fire breaks out when Trish is trying so hard to keep her upset in check as she talks Grace very truthfully through her shortcomings as a mother. So much pain in each gesture, where she's doing everything she can to articulate in the most truthful way with Grace... oof, she was mesmerising. She was also very good in all of the panic moments, particularly when Rachel is falling apart; it's a pretty stark way of demonstrating a parent's love for their child can sometimes cause emotions to run so high that they cannot cope when their kid is danger. There's no doubt that Trish feels affection for her daughter now, and wants to at least be accepted for who she is, but in that moment it was actually in all of their best interests that she had some emotional distance.

Also, I was just gutted by Pippa's performance in the Dom subplot. This felt much more subtle in where it falls into the storyline; we see Ziggy bust her ass to save this guy, and yet she still loses him. And when she breaks down, none of the boys seem to think for one second that she is weak for having an emotional moment; they may have teased her about the husband/kids before, but in the field when you lose someone like that no matter who you are, it's a hard pill to swallow.

It's in the episode that I realized we're really not going to get any back story for Mal that explains all those damn rough edges. (Specifically thinking about the bits where we see him and Kev resolving to put aside their beef and get shit done.) I really, really hope that LK considers writing that into a second series, if they get one and if Mal ends up sticking around or coming back. I'd really like to see Rhashan go there in his performance, too. I know there was a real ambition here to accomplish a lot of plot in eight episodes, and I salute them SO much for that attempt... but still, not delving deeper into what made Kev & Trish love Mal to begin with vs. what hardened him and caused so much bitterness and selfishness would have been really helpful to understand.

Mind you, I'm writing this after seeing the finale so on virtually all aspects of Kev's storyline there is STUFF STUFF OMG STUFF that in retrospect colors a lot of what happens here. The moment at which he nearly leaves Asbo in particular; at the time, though it seemed so cruel, I did at the very least understand Kev's urge to press on no matter what to find Trish, who he has just realized there is a real chance to mend fences with and get back together. He cannot lose her... and it's more about not losing her than it is about abandoning Asbo for a second. But thankfully Kev in his heart, the one who is not blindsided by his lingering resentment and rage, ultimately does the right thing.

Because of the intensity of the tunnel plots, I gotta say the Billy/Nina stuff felt like even more of a respite; Billy also has felt really underwritten earlier in the season, but it's nice to see a little bit of him explored and really confound the initial intimations that he was a bit creepy or weird. He's just... well, he's a quiet pond, inn'he? ;)

I just binged watched all 8 episodes and then came in here to see if any one else mentioned it and it looked like no one has. Or maybe I missed it because I have been avoiding discussions on THE SMOKE until I had a chance to watch it.

Anyway, if you're watching the *cough*torrent*cough* version at the 25:17 time stamp, Jamie says "What the FRAK is happening over there?" :) I rewound and replayed it several times to make sure I wasn't hearing things.

P.S. I realise no one is going to see my comment in an old thread except for maybe zegeekgirl if she gets email alerts when a comment has been made in a thread she started :)
asta77 From: asta77 Date: May 27th, 2014 02:08 pm (UTC) (Link Me)
Zegeekgirl and I get all comments emailed to us. ;)

Nice catch! I'll have to take a listen to my copy again. Depending on how I watch (TV vs computer), I sometimes miss bits of dialogue. It would be nice if Jamie mentioned easter eggs like that on Twitter. ;p
meshel73 From: meshel73 Date: May 29th, 2014 03:28 am (UTC) (Link Me)
I must have imagined hearing it seeing as no one else has mentioned it. I was watching it on my iPhone with headphones on in the middle of the night. I'll ask him about it if I get to sit with him at the con in Sydney. But I think Zegeekgirl said she'll be seeing him before then so maybe she'll remember to ask him.
zegeekgirl From: zegeekgirl Date: May 29th, 2014 03:40 am (UTC) (Link Me)
I'll have to see if I have the opportunity to, sometimes these Hero Complex screenings can get a little nuts! ;) I've actually had a really rough time at work lately so tonight was the first chance I had to look at the episode again to check. I couldn't decide if it sounded like he said "frak" or "feck." (the latter of which would be an Easter egg itself, of sorts; Kev isn't Irish, but as Jamie is always proud to point out he IS on his mum's side.) And of course, I have the DVDs and according to the subtitles it's a good old-fashioned F-bomb. ;)
meshel73 From: meshel73 Date: May 31st, 2014 04:02 am (UTC) (Link Me)
Not that he'll ever see it but I tweeted and asked him.

If you don't get to ask him about it at the "Hero Complex" thing, I'll ask him in Sydney.
zegeekgirl From: zegeekgirl Date: May 31st, 2014 08:18 am (UTC) (Link Me)
Oh he'll likely see it, he just doesn't always answer everything. His tweeting comes and goes. ;)

Go ahead and ask him though, as I suspected no one really got a chance for face time; talent usually is escorted out before audience breaks before second half of program.
meshel73 From: meshel73 Date: May 31st, 2014 10:17 pm (UTC) (Link Me)
I don't think he watched the video clip I attached. That definitely doesn't sound like the regular f-word. I'll have to download the clip to my phone and play it for him when I see him.

zegeekgirl From: zegeekgirl Date: May 31st, 2014 10:42 pm (UTC) (Link Me)
Well, in that case, I'll keep my outside bet and say that it's "feck." Let's get a betting pool going. ;)
