Friday Forum: The French Edition
Since filming has begun on Le Pere de ma fille (AKA: The Father of My Daughter), I thought I'd compile what I could find about the film, all the while regretting I didn't study French longer. Online translators can come up with some unique turns of phrase, but I think I've come up with an idea of what we have to look forward to.

The plot and players: Bernard and Gus (French actors Francois Berleand and Gerard Jugnot) are searching for a young woman, Chloe (Olivia Ruiz, in her acting debut), whom both believe to be their daughter. Bernard is rich and distant; Gus poor and prone to drink too much, but is a likable and generous man. The two, exact opposites of each other, are forced to ally themselves in their search for Chloe, a task made more difficult by the presence of Stephan (Jamie). (I'm concluding Jamie's character is named Stephan based on this casting site, which is seeking extras to play guests at the wedding of Chloe and Stephan.)

The sentimental (or romantic?) comedy - either way, WOO!, to Jamie in a comedy - is wrapping up it's first week of filming in the Dordogne region of France. Production will continue through the end of September with the film expected to be released in 2011.

The source for much of the above information I found at, along with some on set photos. No photos of Jamie and I'm uncertain if he has begun filming yet. Although, there was one interesting reference I couldn't quite make out. It seems as if one scene takes place near a river(?), where Bernard and Gus overthrow(?) a rival, which makes me envision Jamie taking a spill into the water. :)

While we await the film to be released, and in sticking with the theme of this post, here's a taste of what to expect from Jamie thanks to convention appearances in France:

And Jamie and Kandyse at Comic-Con France. (Good, but not high quality video.)

If I've missed any scrap of information anyone is aware of, please share! Even if the information isn't about Jamie or his character, I think we're all curious to know more about the project. I suspect Jamie's role is a supporting one, but I'm still very happy to be able to refer to it as Jamie Bamber's new film. :)

This is still my favorite of all the Jules Verne Fest clips. It's from SciFi France which means he's not subtitled when he speaks French (My poor high-school French allows me to figure out most of what his answers are though. ;) ) But I do love how he keeps starting in French and finishing in English. And some of his answers are brilliant. And good lord, he looks so good. UNF. (Waves Team Scruffy flag...):

So excited by the prospect of Jamie speaking French on film that I'm setting aside the worry that the film might not get U.S. distribution at the moment. Not casting any aspersions on its quality w/ that thought, mind you... just that a lot of foreign films, even the really good ones, don't get shown theatrically here. Hopefully it will get a UK release, they exhibit more French films there. And that will help guarantee that we can buy a DVD with English subtitles on it one day - if all we have is the French Region 2 DVD, subtitles might not be guaranteed! :P

Although, as I told asta77 the other day, seeing as how it's a comedy and Jamie's character in all likelihood lives this time, I might be happy enough to watch it even without subtitles. Heh.

Admittedly, I was unaware of who Olivia Ruiz was before this (my Euro-pop-culture gauge is slipping!), but I downloaded one of her albums and I reeeeally like her. I have an affinity for French lady pop singers anyway, from the ye-ye girls (Francoise Hardy, France Gall, Sylvie Vartan - aunt of fellow TV boyfriend Michael Vartan, FACT! ;) ) up through Vanessa Paradis and Charlotte Gainsbourg. There's a particular effervescence in French pop in general that I love, and Olivia's definitely got that plus that edgier nouvelle chanson vibe that I like a lot.

Plus, she's quite the hottie. ;)

I'm really quite excited about seeing Jamie in a comedy! That's a first isn't it? (Other than Tigh me up Tigh me down, in which he was absolutely priceless!)

I haven't found any more information, other than Jean-Pierre Darroussin is playing the third father figure, that Chloe has chosen for herself. Which clears up this whole confusion about Jamie playing a love interest and potential father figure, the initial report had something mixed up!

Also apparantly the two guys try to contact her a day before her wedding. That's all I could find.

Yeah, other than TMUTMD, there is no comedy on his resume. And that's actually a favorite Lee ep of mine. :)

Did you see the L&O:UK post with his ITV Q&A?

What have you been doing since filming finished?

“I’ve was out in South Africa doing some filming just before the World Cup, which was very interesting and I am just about to start filming a movie in France. It is a romantic comedy and I play an American who can speak French. I speak fluent French and Italian. It's something I have always wanted to do, so I am very excited. Then I will be back to film more Law & Order:UK! I have had a very varied time recently.”

I'm amused he's playing an American, though he technically is one. I guess he's too good at the accents AND the languages. ;)

And since Jamie isn't that much older than Olivia, I had a hard time seeing him as a father figure. It's almost starting to sound like a follow up to Three Men and a Baby. ;)

Thanks for the interview snippet. I bet Jamie loves the challenge!
Stephan isn't an American name/spelling is it? Weird name choice...

I know! The father figure part was confusing even for a French movie, fiancee is a much more fitting role!

I was wondering if maybe it wasn't Stephen, and the casting notice goofed on that.
