Simple - so they can cram in more commercials. When the show airs on ITV, the network breaks are fewer and shorter. Because U.S. television is so utterly driven by advertising, we have to sit through more ads, hence imported shows are almost always edited to allow for more and longer breaks. (Note too how, for example on BBCA, they don't allow the actual credits to run at the end... they stick them on a quick-flashing ticker on the bottom so that they can run another show promo at the same time, allowing them to get to the next program faster.)

Actual BBC programming tends to suffer even worse here, because the BBC (as a public service broadcaster) airs NO commercial breaks during the episodes. So, fair warning for those who will be watching Outcasts when it eventially airs on BBCA... there WILL be big cuts. :(
