even if I am not entirely convinced by the close up of evil smirking Eric Mabius coming in on the shuttle (a bit anvillicious) in the previews

Not entirely convinced in what sense? That it's a portent of good show to come, or that he's in fact evil? (Cause if it's the latter, I'm with you. The moral gauges on the principles are sooo all over the place that I wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to be quite excellent.)

Oh, the portent stuff... I just thought it was a bit too heavy as foreshadowing goes and lacking in subtlety? It seemed coarse - not what I expected in this show...

Then again, I am happy to doubt the long term good/evil/neither one nor the other colours of any character. Moral ambiguity! She rules!!!

Well yes, I mean I enjoy questioning whether the characters in a show I love are making the best decisions for the right reasons. That is a big reason why I continued to love BSG so much, and many other shows I love present the same dilemma. I think in this particular case, the episode was so crowded yet brief enough to not get a real anchor point on which to base those observations; maybe Episode 2 will help. ;)
