Wonder if they're waiting to see how the Bamber less episodes do. I know we're biased but I always got the impression from the media here Brooks and Devlin was considered by far the best past of the show by most people.

While we are certainly biased ;), when I read about the show it's Jamie and Brad and the Matt/Ronnie relationship that seems to receive the majority of the focus. Not that losing Jamie wouldn't hurt, but I think the loss of the Matt/Ronnie partnership would have the greater impact. I haven't done a screen time analysis, but it seemed like we had more of the Coppers in Series 5.

the Matt/Ronnie relationship

I really think they're the emotional heart of the show. I've been working on re-watching the original eps that these are based on and it feels SO different. Bad Faith (that Confession is based on) was just so flat because Briscoe and Logan don't have half the relationship that Ronnie and Matt do. Logan didn't even TELL Briscoe that the priest was an abuser for a long time.

It really all comes down to the kind of chemistry Ronnie and Sam have. Which is why I'm DYING to find out who is playing Sam. I'm guessing publicizing the new character is a bit of a spoiler and that's why they haven't done it? Because otherwise they really should be getting as much press on the new regular as possible.

Yeah I don't envy the task of the guy coming in, and in a lot of ways I think the writers have made a rod for their own back by killing Matt instead of just having him leave, it makes the audience more likely to resent the new guy as humans are irrational creatures, especially about religion, politics and TV.

Although perhaps I speak to soon and he'll be Jimmy Smitts to Jamie's David Caruso. :P

Lets hope he doesn't spend his csi ep taking of his sunglasses before every dramatic exposition moment!

You may have a point re: killing off a character vs. writing them out. Of course, I'd also argue this is just one of many factors exacerbating this particular situation. (See also: a) the theory I mentioned before that the short nature of British telly seasons amplifies the tendencies for fandom-prone audience members to cling to characters, particularly in a procedural, in a way they might not otherwise; b) the particularly wonderful chemistry that Jamie and Brad had together, c) Bambi's shitty batting average for survival. ;) )

I've read discussion of the show on other boards that are not Bamber focused and I'd have to agree. Have also read more than one longtime L&O franchise watcher discussing how Matt & Ronnie are their favorite cop team of all.
