"Perception" 1x06: Discussion Thread
prcp106-00008
"Smug, me? WOT?" (Yes, YOU, Hathaway, ya berk.) ;)

It's that time again!: Here's your thread for imminent discussion-making purposes. Please navigate all chatter in the general direction of Perception episode 1x06, "Lovesick" (the second of Jamie's three appearances on the show) after it airs tonight. The above screencap from 1x02 will, of course, be replaced once we have new Hathaway face-time to ogle. ;) FIXED. He had even less screen time this week, didn't he? Boooo.

Professor Hathaway, you sir are an arse.... A lovely arse though. Funny seeing Jamie play someone so arrogant and obnoxious.

But he is so good at it! I'm impressed.

My reaction to the scene between Pierce and Hathaway was that Hathaway was a total ass, but, OMG, was Jamie cracking me up! He may not have a lot of screentime, but he's making the most of it. :)

I don't have a lot to say about this episode. Once again, they made the plot overly complicated with at least two too many plot twists.

And while I don't have an issue with Hathaway being an ass, he seems designed that way to make Daniel seem the logical, better choice for Kate. Accept, I'm to believe Kate's only two choices for a relationship are a schizophrenic who doesn't want to take his meds and hallucinates or the arrogant ass who just wants to get her into bed? UGH.

I don't have a lot to say about this episode. Me neither, actually. Admittedly I may have hit fast forward. More than once. Also, I thought we were done with the intensely cliched and annoying hot to trot student who can't seem to keep from affixing her person to Daniel and making him paralyzingly uncomfortable. Oh, we aren't? Oh, okay. *HEAD-DESK*

And while I don't have an issue with Hathaway being an ass, he seems designed that way to make Daniel seem the logical, better choice for Kate.

I will raise you one and say that I LOVE that Hathaway is an ass and I love that Jamie's getting to play it broadly. The problem is that in his function as the antagonist for Daniel on both personal and professional levels, that broadness from the minute he came on screen seems so... miscalculated? Why again did he not start out charming and gradually have his bastardly ways revealed? Characters like Hathaway are terrific fun when they are one-off, even recurring, thorns in the side that the protagonists have to deal with from time to time. But - and I realize that most of what I'm saying in this paragraph is exactly what I said about Jamie's last episode, too - there is NOTHING in the script to make us understand why Kate is entertaining Hathaway's advances at all. Other than "Bloody hell, he's hotter than a hundred white-hot suns" - that is fine for cracking jokes in comms like this one, but I don't care if it's the B-plot or even the C-plot, stop writing two or three more twists into your A-plot and FIX THAT, people!

Sorry, I had ruthless pie for dessert. ;) Carry on.

Liked the hallway scene, and I got the feeling he had fun with it.

Hathway

Yes Hathaway is an ass, but we all know a man like that and some of us had fallen prey to his charms or lack of charm.

I really want to like this show, but I keep finding myself feeling like the plot keeps dragging on and on. I do like seeing Jamie playing a different character type, but seems like it would be more interesting if he was at least a little bit charming with Kate and show his true colors when he's talking to Daniel.

Then there's Rachel Leigh Cook. I really do like her, usually. But there is just something about her delivery of lines that seems so droll and boring. Seems like her mouth is moving with her lines but there's no emotion in it, no facial expression. Her lips are moving but the rest of her is so stiff.

*nod nod nod nod* YES. Exactly. It feels like there should be a duplicity to him which underlines Daniel's entire point that this guy is a charlatan and a jerk. Which would be perfectly illustrated if Hathaway were a real smoothie and genuinely made Kate swoon, meanwhile the arrogant attitude that we've seen him display so far is only occasionally present... and more so as his arc progresses. (Plus, though as noted it's great to watch Jamie have fun with such a smarmy character, it would arguably be even better if he got to show some range by being both smarmy AND dreamy, depending on when it suited Hathaway's motives.)

In a way, this "No, seriously, WHY didn't you write it this way?" conundrum is a perfect nutshell example of my frustration with the logic on this show. But it applies to a billion other elements too (which I won't go into because, well we'll only have one more discussion thread, why bother? ;) )

His bum didn't get enough screen time, either. ;)

Did you watch the pilot, at least? They made a pretty explicit reveal at the end of the pilot that Natalie is a hallucination, though I kind of guessed she was earlier on in the episode; I have only watched Jamie's eps since then, so I'm not sure how they've handled her scenes in the interim.

I know - horrible late for this. It's almost time for another episode. But I guess that better later than never applies even here.

From what I've read in this thread I'm in minority but I'm not being put off by Hathaway being an ass. And you know why? Because at least until now he was an honest ass. And that's not so common these days. He is sort of like - what you see is what you get.

On the other side - what some of you said about the possibility of him being all smooth and charming at the beginning and then letting us (and Kate) know that he is an ass.... well, that would have given Jamie more to work with. As it is I count our blessings - we got to see him, it;s a different role and I like the clothes.
Hmm, the fact that I don;t like Kate that much is another story.
