Jamie Bamber Fan Expo Canada Panel
Yeah, we already have a Fan Expo post, but I think this deserves a post all it's own. Once again, we are fortunate to have an awesome fan film Jamie's entire panel and post to YouTube. Many thanks to Ryan Yeager for this one. :)

I'm still in the process of watching the panel, so no thoughts other than I love the mod. ;)

Big ups to Ryan! Thanks dude, wherever you are.

- Nice to finally have oonfirmation of my suspicions that he actually LOVED playing Fat!Lee. ;) (At least at first, granted...)

- The bit where he goes into how social media and such factors into the casting process is really, really interesting. I would still argue that it's smart to know the avenues available to promote a show based on the following of the cast and/or creative talent. (Still feel like ITV's general softballing of their publicity for programming completely failed to capitalize, for example, on both Jamie's and Freema's following to promote LOUK.) However... he's absolutely right in that, if an actor's following online is dictating whether or not they're being considered for a role? That's ridiculous. Cast the right goddamn actor for the role; all the followers in the world isn't going to help a show that doesn't work because it's badly cast. :P

- No one asked about 17th Precinct. Therefore, still on my to-do list. ;)

And because I still don't have a paid account where I can edit typos - no, I don't know what oonfirmation is either. ;)

Thank you so much for the amazing video. It's always a joy to hear Jamie speak. The accent alone is reducing me to a puddle of goo (and omg! What a treat to hear him speaking French and Italian, even though I don't understand a thing;)

I'm so looking forward to seeing Monday Morning this coming January. I hope the show is a success. :)

Thanks to Ryan for uploading and you for linking!

Tbh I always hope casting directors don't let online followings influence their decisions too much, because I don't really think it's really representative (some fans are just 'louder' than other)and it's not indicative of who's best for the part.

Other than that I think I agree on his view of 'Caprica', wasn't my cup of tea. and how cute was it how his face lit up when Kerry was mentioned? Must have been so awkward for her to audition!
And I think he's touching on something re: Fat Lee which I've always felt got a weird reaction in fandom but I won't get into that now, as I'll just get carried away...

Have fun at Dargon Con to those going! Give us some updates if you can!

(some fans are just 'louder' than other)

Exactly. Plenty of fans are incredibly passionate about the titles and the talent that they follow, regardless of whether or not their online presence comes off like a hive mind of flail. ;) And none of that should have any bearing at all on a major creative decision like casting, well before you even have a show to promote.

I won't get into that now, as I'll just get carried away...

Hey, this is definitely the place to do so, by all means... get carried away. ;)

Weeeell, since you asked:
I don’t think it made a whole lot of sense within the story, as they made a point out of how they were running low on resources at several times. Even putting that aside it seemed weird that Lee would indulge himself while life on the planet was so harsh. Secondly I just couldn’t quite buy it from Lee’s character. I think he would have hardened and grown resentful after what Kara did, not just let go (that’s also what they ultimately went with but why the interlude?). I would have been okay with them tackling the theme of depression but they didn’t really follow through with it. Was he depressed or did he just settle in with his new wife? Jamie seems to lean more in the second direction, but people tend to gain a few pounds in a new relationship when they’re happy not borderline depressed, so idk...

The other thing is the fan reaction to it. I’m fine with having a bit of a laugh about it (and let’s face it, his face was just far too orange...). But all the trash talk it gets just makes me uncomfortable and the show is partially responsible, because they essentially portrayed it as gluttony and ridiculed him (not to mention Adama’s comments). And then the fan reactions: apparently his extra weight makes it impossible to take him seriously as a character, even though he actually does some important stuff during those epis. But the way people seem to dismiss him like he’s just a cartoon figure (not to mention acting like his chubbiness disgusts them) is almost offensive.
However: I do love Jamie for A) not ever feeding into this and B) for doing it in the first place, because it shows that he doesn’t buy into the whole Hollywood vanity too much and I’m not sure many actors (especially young male leads) would have done that.

(I’m glad they didn’t go with the glasses though as that wouldn’t have made a lot of sense either, why should he have developed bad eye sight within a year and wouldn’t that be a problem when he went back into the cockpit…).

I knew this would get out of hand ;) sorry for the rambliness!

Honestly, I don't know that online fan presence has much to do with casting other than, if it was down to two people for a role, and one had a huge fan following, then *Maybe* that person gets the part.

I appreciated his thoughts on Caprica and I agree with him. I think I watched two episodes before giving up. I felt it either didn't connect to BSG or was screwing up continuity more than I could stand.

I'm curious too about your Fat Lee thoughts. I can't say I was a fan of the arc, though that had more to do with the execution of it then actually making Lee heavy for several episodes. But I never hated the story choice as many did. And I have to say Jamie's remarks on why they went in that direction - including why Rymer thought it was a good idea - helped make it all a little better for me. I still have some issues with how it played out once filmed (especially some of Adama's remarks to his son), but I get the choice better now.

I'm somehow happy to hear that about the casting process. Seems like it would be kinda unfair otherwise. I've always wondered if someone from production would really brave the Tumblr madness...

I don't think I would have stuck with Caprica with or without BSG connection, tbh.

A week later and I finally get round to watching this. I'm even more jealous of you guys getting to DragonCon now! ;) This is a lovely, lovely panel. Thanks for sharing it. What a sweetie!

I think I may have to re-post his comments about Robert Lindsay to following_sea. With credit of course :)
