Dragon*Con 2012: Day 3 Video
Just a quick post to let you know I've uploaded the videos for Day 3 of Dragon*Con. And Photobucket seems to be working again! WOO! Whatever shots of mine that managed to turn out OK (oh, how I hate D*C's lighting for the big panels) I'll post this weekend.

Jamie talks about using his American accent for roles.

The rest of the vids are HERE.

By the way, I'm watching some of the clips for the first time as I'm posting and feeling as if I need to offer Dramamine with viewing. :p Some of the clips are pretty shaky in places. And a bit overexposed. But I can blame the D*C lighting for that! ;)

I'm coming out of lurking *waves* to say a big thank you to JBN for all of this. It's much appreciated. You guys are awesome.

Glad you decided to delurk! :) You are very welcome and we are happy that we are able to share. There was some worry about getting the nosebleed seats in the ballrooms. ;)

I'm so new to BSG, I feel practically virginal. And I've never been to a convention. I'm very tempted to go to Galacticon in May but I wouldn't know anyone there :-P. My first love was ST:Voyager (in fact, some of Jamie's portrayal reminded me initially of my other fave Robbie Duncan McNeill (Tom Paris), which someone pointed out to me. Hence, how I came across BSG.).

Anyway, I'm rambling. It's really amazing that with all of the same questions he's asked that Jamie is so patient. There's got to be more to ask him (esp. about his new ventures) than just about his ability to do an American accent. He's great and I'm just glad there's a devoted group willing to get those anecdotes for those who are just too shy to go.

It amazes me with all the same questions they are asked, they manage to come up fresh takes on, essentially, the same answers. I think that was addressed a bit in one of the clips. Or it may have been a bit I didn't record since it was mostly Richard Hatch talking about it. It's all a blur to me at this point.

What's really amazing about the entire BSG cast and the fandom is that they (and we) still want to talk about the show years later. I went to other panels which were a mix of the casts talking about their show, but also other projects or they just goofed around. And in the case of The Vampire Diaries panel, there may have been one direct question about the show answered.

I never thought I'd go to a con, but this was my eighth D*C and I've been to six(?) other, much smaller, conventions. They are a lot of fun, but Galacticon, which will have far fewer than 55,000 attendees, might be a better start for a newbie. :)

I think I've scoured youtube for just about everything BSG-related in terms of convention panels and yeah, I never tire of hearing the actors wax rhapsodic about all of the big ideas that the show tackled; it's something I wish Trek did up until its demise on television. There is a great depth to this show that requires more questions as the years go on; I just wish convention-goers will see your clips and go past the old questions and think of those new ones! ;-) And hopefully, the actors will still be interested in coming. The ambiance is so varied - from aww to ooh. Every time I stumble on a panel with EJO and Mary M, it just fills me with warm fuzzies.

You're getting me where we live now! Any time I have to prepare for a panel or roundtable, I always try to do a little homework and think of at least ONE thing that isn't going to sound like the battery of same-old that they'll be asked. With public/fan panels at cons of course it's different - there's that element you have your finger on, which is that there are always people discovering the show and it's impossible to know everything that's out there. Everything is fresh to them, and not everyone gets into it so deeply they seek out every sound byte like we do. ;) But YES, the complexities of ideas that the show approaches guarantees that debate will always be healthy (and encouraged, IMO).

Oh, and certain stories are just always, always funny! Have you watched the clip where they talk about "33"? - that story about EJO wanting OMG ALL THE SUICIDES? They told that on the Roundtable Podcast years ago but it's as funny now as it ever was.

I've tried to track down Ron Moore's podcasts, but all I can find was a few transcripts (while I also appreciate, are so difficult to read, very cumbersome). I've only had access to video clips so I don't think I heard that story. I know about EJO hiring a psychologist to consult on the show about sleep deprivation, but I think that's about it. I do so love "33" as a series opener. I've rewatched that one more than a few times.

Most of the podcasts served as the DVD commentary, but there were a few extra ones that only were posted to the (then) Sci-Fi site. We might have to think of finding them on our hard drives and posting at some point. ;)

I only have access to BSG via Netflix and Hulu. I love all the behind the scenes stuff on Hulu - including the webisodes, but I don't think I've seen any DVD extras. Is it worth it to plonk down the cash for the DVDs? (<--this might be a silly question)

Before I forget, I did manage to see the pilot for 17th Precinct on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PebLrjy5CSg

I can't believe Jamie hasn't seen it yet! Maybe someone put it up shortly after it was taken down by NBC or something?

And finally, if you could post a podcast or two, that would so awesomesauce. Major, major sqeeage! :-D
asta77 From: asta77 Date: September 7th, 2012 02:27 pm (UTC) (Link Me)
Well, of course I'm going to say it's worth the money. Then again, I have it on DVD and Blu-ray. :p I would say wait for a good deal on the complete series (that's how I caved on the Blu-ray set). There is quite a bit of content from the Sci-Fi site on the discs. I haven't updated my LJ in over a year, but I used to recap the podcasts starting with Season 2.

I've bookmarked your site and will read your recaps when I get back from school!

We definitely should. There are really two podcasts that stand out as worth listening two which were exclusives that did not end up on the DVDs as commentaries: The roundtable at Ron Moore's house (that was Jamie, Tahmoh, Callis and Mark Sheppard); and the Frak Party one which they recorded right after a group of fans got to watch the Season 3 finale and then they could ask RDM whatever they wanted. Sadly, there aren't many podcasts with the cast on them; would have been great if they'd done more.

Our pleasure. I know, that sounds a little ludicrious on one level - of COURSE it's their damn pleasure to get to see Jamie and the cast over several days! - but we could do that on our own and just keep it to ourselves if we wanted. asta77 started the site partially out of frustration for missing an event Jamie was at that she didn't know about. (Correct, cap?) Myself, 90% of the events I want to go to, I can't because work demands or just sheer costs make it impossible (And heck, sometimes even with events that I'm at - I see you, SDCC - I'm either busy with work or there's too much going on to see everything/everyone I want to.) So I know how great it is when you realize someone was rolling and can share. ;)

Correct. I was relying on another site for updates as to what Jamie was up to and found out from the old Sci-Fi forum (which I visited infrequently at the time) I had missed a con appearance reasonably close to me. :/ That's what put the idea in my head to start a site so no one else would suffer as I had. ;) Though, at the time, I never imagined the site being where it's at today. It's still smallish compared to other official and fan run sites, no question, but I have more eyeballs here and on Twitter than I anticipated..

Very cool! :-)))

BTW, I named my son after 'Nick' from The Thin Man series. It's good to see someone else who likes it!

How Cool! :D 'The Thin Man' is definitely one of my all time faves. Dean Stockwell was at Dragon*Con either last year or the year before and I had him sign my 'Song of the Thin Man' DVD since he played Nick Jr. I even had him write "To Asta" rather than my real name. ;) It was strange having my fandoms collide.

I actually became Asta (later had to add 77 because too many Asta'a online) when I registered at my first board, a Buffy board. I thought it would be unwise to select a Buffy-centric name (one of the best decisions I ever made) and The Thin Man/Asta popped into my head. I still occasionally look up at the screen when Nick or Nora shout, "Asta!"

Believe me, I understand how difficult it is to juggle documenting something fan-oriented and trying to enjoy yourself at the same time. A loooong time ago, I helped a Boston Legal fan site by going locally to a set designer association's tour of the set in Manhattan Beach - even though I wasn't a set designer! I couldn't take any pictures, but I made a point of drawing an aerial view of the layout as well as taking notes as to where each important prop was.

Most people would probably think that's nuts (I certainly do in hindsight lol), but the website I did the report for seemed to really like having the added feature. And watching the show and knowing where everything in context made it more enjoyable. But yeah, it was a very hectic, multitasking day. Lots of work while trying to make the most of being there, too. So I do appreciate that people who go to cons who are willing to share anything at all, from a few pictures to videos or written con reports.

It's funny you used to help out with a 'Boston Legal' site and Jamie is about to start filming David E Kelly's 'Monday Mornings'. :)

Speaking of juggling, I discovered I had my camera not set to the best setting after I recorded Monday's panel. The quality is fine (and I cleaned it up a bit), but it's been bugging me it may have been batter. I kept monkeying with settings all weekend due to the lousy lighting in the ballrooms - and occasionally hitting the wrong button - and forgot to check before I started recording. :/

Believe me, it's a double bonus that Jamie's going to star on a DEK show! I loved The Practice and BL, totally crazy over them, but I'm over the legal shows. While it's because DEK was a lawyer, it's so refreshing to see him branch out into medical drama and with such an interesting twist. And since I'm going back to school to be a surgical physician assistant, I will be glued to the third bonus of the show's subject matter as well.

You are such a perfectionist! Honestly, whatever you offer up should be appreciated no matter what.

It's a good kind of nuts. The "trainspotter" kind of nuts which isn't at all overstepping boundaries or being intrusive (you were there on the tour after all!) - we just like these kind of details! (Trust me, when I got to see all the BSG props in Pasadena at the Propworx auction, I spent a lot of time grooving on the little details. Holy shit, that Viper dash has SO MANY SHINY FLASHY THEEEENGS. XD)

I'd just like to point out that the political discourse that happens in this clip totally punched me right in the politics-nerd feels ...

During the panel, I actually tweeted out "Apollos On the Mount!" ;)

(Footnote: It does, however, make me a little misty about not getting more Quorum Lee; given Jamie's own passion for this aspect of the show, if he'd gotten more to do in that context he probably would have been on fire performance wise. Ah well. What ya gonna doooo?)

Wow. That's a brilliant series of comments. Were all the panels so frank and thought provoking? Not that I'd expect anything less from these guys of course! It would be an unforgivable cliche to say "not just a pretty face", but it's so true...
zegeekgirl From: zegeekgirl Date: September 7th, 2012 08:51 pm (UTC) (Link Me)
Frank, definitely. Thought-provoking, quite a bit - you'll see as you watch the clips, there's definitely a lot of food for thought but also a lot of silliness! A great balance all 'round, as most BSG cast gatherings tend to be. (This clip - and Jamie's comments in particular - just stood out because it made my appealed to both my love of a good, strong allegory and my inner liberal wonk. ;) )
anteros_lmc From: anteros_lmc Date: September 7th, 2012 10:30 pm (UTC) (Link Me)
It's the combination of daft silliness with really quite incisive commentary that makes these clips so brilliant. Wonder how often the US constitution and the separation of the church and the state get discussed at con panels?!
