Gaaaaah, it's nearly the end!  And we've reached the first of the two episodes that Sky has been so secretive about it they've posted NO images at all until just now. (Yeah, we haven't been neglecting doing promotional still updates; there haven't been any released to post! :P)

Get ready for LOTS OF THINGS GO BOOM, as evidenced if you watched the trailer for this week's episode. In the meantime, once you've seen it please fire away in the comments...

Sometimes real life gets in the way of timely internet postings. We do try, but we're only human. ;)

Finale discussion thread is up now.

Okay... let's get into this one!

I actually wanted to go back and watch it a second time to confirm my gut feeling, which does hold up: This is actually my least favorite episode of the season. There are many things I do really love in it, but overall the amount of time we spent dealing with the tunnel explosion and the related plot threads almost made this seem more like a bottle episode in the degree to which the story was contained than the actual bottle episode the week before!

Also, though I totally get how this episode moves the story forward to where it needs to be in the finale... I admit, it does bug me that LK chose to go the route of involving Trish in a huge fire scenario as the penultimate plot. We've talked a lot about how she's taken many common tropes and turned them inside-out in the writing so far, but to me this felt mostly tropey without a whole lot of strong foiling of expectations to it. It felt like the show at its soapiest, conveniently placing the one non-White Watch prinicpal character in harms way to get there.

Now, mind you, some of the strongest work in the episode from the cast came from Jodie, particularly before the fire breaks out when Trish is trying so hard to keep her upset in check as she talks Grace very truthfully through her shortcomings as a mother. So much pain in each gesture, where she's doing everything she can to articulate in the most truthful way with Grace... oof, she was mesmerising. She was also very good in all of the panic moments, particularly when Rachel is falling apart; it's a pretty stark way of demonstrating a parent's love for their child can sometimes cause emotions to run so high that they cannot cope when their kid is danger. There's no doubt that Trish feels affection for her daughter now, and wants to at least be accepted for who she is, but in that moment it was actually in all of their best interests that she had some emotional distance.

Also, I was just gutted by Pippa's performance in the Dom subplot. This felt much more subtle in where it falls into the storyline; we see Ziggy bust her ass to save this guy, and yet she still loses him. And when she breaks down, none of the boys seem to think for one second that she is weak for having an emotional moment; they may have teased her about the husband/kids before, but in the field when you lose someone like that no matter who you are, it's a hard pill to swallow.

It's in the episode that I realized we're really not going to get any back story for Mal that explains all those damn rough edges. (Specifically thinking about the bits where we see him and Kev resolving to put aside their beef and get shit done.) I really, really hope that LK considers writing that into a second series, if they get one and if Mal ends up sticking around or coming back. I'd really like to see Rhashan go there in his performance, too. I know there was a real ambition here to accomplish a lot of plot in eight episodes, and I salute them SO much for that attempt... but still, not delving deeper into what made Kev & Trish love Mal to begin with vs. what hardened him and caused so much bitterness and selfishness would have been really helpful to understand.

Mind you, I'm writing this after seeing the finale so on virtually all aspects of Kev's storyline there is STUFF STUFF OMG STUFF that in retrospect colors a lot of what happens here. The moment at which he nearly leaves Asbo in particular; at the time, though it seemed so cruel, I did at the very least understand Kev's urge to press on no matter what to find Trish, who he has just realized there is a real chance to mend fences with and get back together. He cannot lose her... and it's more about not losing her than it is about abandoning Asbo for a second. But thankfully Kev in his heart, the one who is not blindsided by his lingering resentment and rage, ultimately does the right thing.

Because of the intensity of the tunnel plots, I gotta say the Billy/Nina stuff felt like even more of a respite; Billy also has felt really underwritten earlier in the season, but it's nice to see a little bit of him explored and really confound the initial intimations that he was a bit creepy or weird. He's just... well, he's a quiet pond, inn'he? ;)

I just binged watched all 8 episodes and then came in here to see if any one else mentioned it and it looked like no one has. Or maybe I missed it because I have been avoiding discussions on THE SMOKE until I had a chance to watch it.

Anyway, if you're watching the *cough*torrent*cough* version at the 25:17 time stamp, Jamie says "What the FRAK is happening over there?" :) I rewound and replayed it several times to make sure I wasn't hearing things.

P.S. I realise no one is going to see my comment in an old thread except for maybe zegeekgirl if she gets email alerts when a comment has been made in a thread she started :)

Zegeekgirl and I get all comments emailed to us. ;)

Nice catch! I'll have to take a listen to my copy again. Depending on how I watch (TV vs computer), I sometimes miss bits of dialogue. It would be nice if Jamie mentioned easter eggs like that on Twitter. ;p

I must have imagined hearing it seeing as no one else has mentioned it. I was watching it on my iPhone with headphones on in the middle of the night. I'll ask him about it if I get to sit with him at the con in Sydney. But I think Zegeekgirl said she'll be seeing him before then so maybe she'll remember to ask him.

I'll have to see if I have the opportunity to, sometimes these Hero Complex screenings can get a little nuts! ;) I've actually had a really rough time at work lately so tonight was the first chance I had to look at the episode again to check. I couldn't decide if it sounded like he said "frak" or "feck." (the latter of which would be an Easter egg itself, of sorts; Kev isn't Irish, but as Jamie is always proud to point out he IS on his mum's side.) And of course, I have the DVDs and according to the subtitles it's a good old-fashioned F-bomb. ;)

Not that he'll ever see it but I tweeted and asked him.

If you don't get to ask him about it at the "Hero Complex" thing, I'll ask him in Sydney.

Oh he'll likely see it, he just doesn't always answer everything. His tweeting comes and goes. ;)

Go ahead and ask him though, as I suspected no one really got a chance for face time; talent usually is escorted out before audience breaks before second half of program.

I don't think he watched the video clip I attached. That definitely doesn't sound like the regular f-word. I'll have to download the clip to my phone and play it for him when I see him.

Well, in that case, I'll keep my outside bet and say that it's "feck." Let's get a betting pool going. ;)
