What Asta's saying is the real crucial factor in all this; I mean, if you wanted, I'd say send a tweet to Kudos and ask them if shopping around the show is a possibility they have even considered. That would be useful information to have before anyone starts a petition, to determine if they're receptive to it. They'd have a big job on their hands now.
Again, as an example: In Ripper Street's case I actually have no idea what the contract situation was like, but its very possible the cast all had further series on their contracts when BBC pulled the plug. So that's one thing Tiger Aspect wouldn't have had to worry about, if they were negotiating with another outlet. Another example: Jamie was contracted for three years on LOUK when he signed on to that show; they released him from his contract early, when he booked the 17th Precinct pilot. Every situation is different, and if everyone on The Smoke had a tentative contract for just one series that's a lot of wrangling once they are on to the next job. :(
